Message from the Principal
It is remarkable to realise that we have reached the conclusion of Term 2, marking the halfway point of the academic year. This Term has been both dynamic and productive, filled with a wide array of educational and co-curricular opportunities for our students.
One of the most noticeable developments at the College has been the significant progress on our new building project. In a short space of time, substantial work has been undertaken, transforming the physical landscape of our College. As with any large-scale construction, there have been unavoidable disruptions, particularly in relation to parking and increased congestion during drop-off and pick-up times. We are sincerely grateful to all members of the Ashdale Secondary College community for your continued patience, understanding and cooperation throughout this period. We remain committed to keeping you well-informed as the project progresses.

This Term commenced with the launch of our newly enhanced and highly successful Careers Expo. Hosted in our College gymnasium, the event brought together numerous industry professionals and education experts, providing valuable insights to support students and families in making informed subject selections and future career choices.
Our educational program was further enriched by over 100 excursions, camps and incursions this Term—each designed to deepen student engagement and connect classroom learning with real-world experiences.
Traditionally known as the 'assessment Term, Term 2 involved a significant focus on testing and evaluation. Students in Years 8 to 12 undertook various assessments and examinations, which have been diligently marked and moderated by our teaching staff. These assessments inform the Semester reports that were distributed recently. Families are encouraged to refer to our Connect notices for information regarding recent changes to our reporting format.
Ashdale students also demonstrated excellence in the sporting arena, achieving success in football, soccer and netball. Their efforts, sportsmanship and determination have brought great pride to our College, and we commend all participants for their dedication and teamwork.
Preparations are well underway for our College production of Chicago: Teen Edition. Staff and students have dedicated countless hours to rehearsals, and we look forward to sharing the results of their hard work in Term 3. We encourage families to secure their tickets and support this outstanding initiative.
We extend our deepest appreciation to our dedicated teaching and support staff. Their unwavering commitment to student learning and well-being is the foundation of our College's success. Their professionalism and passion for education continually inspire us.
To our students—thank you for your energy, resilience and willingness to embrace every opportunity. Your academic progress and personal achievements continue to strengthen the culture and spirit of our college community.
We also express sincere gratitude to our parents, caregivers, P&C, College Board, and the broader community. Your support and partnership play a vital role in helping us nurture future-ready learners. It is with great pleasure that we welcome Mr Steve Sartain as our new College Board Chairperson. With a wealth of experience across the military, education and emergency services, Mr Sartain brings invaluable insights and leadership to our ongoing journey of improvement.
As we head into the Term 2 break, I wish all students, staff and families a restful and rejuvenating holiday period. May it be a time to recharge and reconnect, ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of Term 3.

Message from Jonelle Carstens, 2025 P&C President.
If you want to be the first to know about upcoming events, achievements, and future developments, including updates from teachers and students, we invite you to join us at the next P&C meeting. Visit the Calendar on the College’s website for more information. The time commitment is low, and no active fundraising is required. We need more members to participate in voting on where funds are allocated.
*To be eligible to vote, a gold coin donation is required.
We were all excited to hear the update on the building progress and obstacles the school is facing. Acting Principal Mr. Robert Cross pleasantly informed us about the special initiatives, positive staff spirit, and the extended supportive community. Mr. Cross further filled us in on student numbers, staffing, important dates & events, news and reports.
The P&C committee had a balance of $20,000 in funds to allocate, which sparked considerable discussion on how to best allocate the funds according to the submitted requests. We are glad to report that the following funds were allocated:
- Japanese Exchange Tour Essential Items | $1,695
- Establishment of Esports Club | $3,251 approved and $1,480 deferred
- Staging of Chicago 2025 Theatre Production | $7,117.30
- Breakfast Club | $1,000 approved and $1,500 deferred
- P&C ATAR Scholarship | $5,000 approved and $10,000 deferred
- Write a Book in a Day Competition | $317

Message from College Board Chair
The College Board met for the second time this year in June, and I had the honour of assuming the role of Chairperson. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Ian Brotherton for his dedicated leadership and service to Ashdale. His contribution has helped lay a strong foundation on which we continue to build.
This meeting invited members of our wider College community to engage with the Board and gain a deeper insight into its operations. One of the key discussions at the meeting was the recent Student PIVOT Survey results. We were heartened by the strong sense of belonging expressed by students, the continual improvement of the student learning experience and the inclusive and caring culture Ashdale continues to build.
The Board also received updates on the exciting new building projects at the College. These new facilities will significantly enhance learning opportunities, support anticipated growth in student numbers, and ensure that Ashdale remains a leading school in WA.
As we approach the mid-year break, the Board would like to extend its heartfelt appreciation to all Ashdale staff for their dedication, professionalism, and care. Your impact in shaping the minds and character of our future leaders is deeply valued and profoundly inspiring.
On behalf of the College Board, I wish every student a continued, fulfilling and successful year—both in learning and in life. Together, we are shaping a vibrant and successful Ashdale Community.

Term 2 Tug of War Showdown: Year 7 & 8 Bring the Heat!
This Term’s House Tug of War battles were full of energy, determination, and loud House spirit as Year 7 and Year 8 students went head-to-head in the ultimate test of teamwork and strength.
Year 7 Results:

Year 8 Results:

But the highlight for many? When the teachers stepped up for their own tug-of-war face-offs!
- Mr Duckworth vs Mr Doherty brought the crowd to life with a fierce (and slightly competitive) pull-off.
- Meanwhile, Ms Manwaring took on Mr Nolan in an epic match of determination and drama – with plenty of laughs and cheers all round!

Levitate Leadership Program
Over the course of Semester 1, members of the Un1ty Leadership Team had the opportunity to attend the Levitate Leadership program, hosted by professional public speaker and presenter David Castelanelli. This program covered topics of personality types, time management, interview skills and goal setting, leaving students feeling inspired with new skills of public speaking, cooperation, determination and organisation. The program effectively encouraged students to collaborate, creating a stable and thought-provoking environment.
The Levitate program exposed students to different ways they can improve their leadership skills through not only organisation and motivation but also their roles in community and team settings. One of the most defining sessions was the DISC personality workshop, focusing on understanding each individual's personality and its impact on their leadership style. These sessions introduced the concept of four distinct leadership personalities: Dominant, Influential, Steady, and Conscientious. Students learned that:
- Leaders with dominant personalities excel at taking charge and could benefit from focusing more on working as a team
- Influential leaders bring energy and motivation, but could benefit from developing strong organisational skills
- Leaders with a steady personality are patient and supportive; they could benefit from stepping out of their comfort zone by becoming more assertive when required
- Leaders with conscientious personalities are reliable, loyal and highly detail-oriented; they could benefit from overthinking less and being more flexible and spontaneous when required
- Recognising these different styles helped students embrace their strengths whilst developing new skills.
Another notable session from the Levitate program was the public speaking session. In the public speaking workshop, students explored the concepts of both style and substance. They practised speaking skills, including tone, confidence, and clear diction, and learned the importance of supporting their points with facts, quotes, and theories. The session highlighted the key abilities required to create and provide engaging and informative presentations. Students also participated in pitching ideas to the group, with two rebuttal questions being used after pitching sessions to help them think clearly and effectively when put on the spot.
Levitate Leadership Program

Every session was impactful amongst the Un1ty Leadership team, providing an environment that focused on self-growth and the ability to collaborate effectively and clearly in a group. Students engaged in multiple activities, including pitching sessions and friendly competitions, which enhanced the sense of community among the team. Overall, the program was extremely memorable and inspired change and improvement among the Un1ty Leadership team.

Year 7 and 9 SSWA Netball Carnival
Ashdale Secondary College proudly competed in the recent School Sport WA (SSWA) Netball Carnival, held at the Fremantle Netball Courts. With a hot day, a long commute, and five games per team, it was a challenging day both physically and mentally—but our students rose to the occasion.
This carnival brought together many strong netball schools, with each pool offering a variety of skill levels. Ashdale entered three Year 7 Academy teams into the Year 7/8 division and two Year 9 Academy teams into the Year 9/10 division. Across the board, our students gave it their all, showcasing teamwork, resilience, and the skills they’ve been developing throughout Term 1.
All seven Ashdale teams impressed with their effort, energy, and determination. It was especially rewarding to see our Year 7 players applying what they’ve learned in their first Semester of Netball Academy training, growing in confidence and connection with each game.
Year 7 and 9 SSWA Netball Carnival

A special mention goes to the Year 9B team, who battled through an incredibly tough pool filled with specialist netball schools. Despite the challenge, they showed an outstanding attitude and never gave up, playing each game with positivity and spirit.
The Year 9A team delivered an incredible performance, going undefeated all day until their final match, where they narrowly went down to St Norbert’s by eight goals. A brilliant effort from a team that continues to build on their strengths and cohesion.
This was a tough carnival against strong competition, and every student who represented Ashdale should be proud of their performance. Their grit, sportsmanship, and growth were a credit to our school.

HaSS Week 2025: Exploring the World Through Humanities
In Week 2 of this Term, the Humanities and Social Sciences (HaSS) Learning Area celebrated HaSS Week!
HaSS as a subject involves studying the key academic disciplines of Geography, History, Civics and Citizenship, and Economics, all of which are essential for students to understand and navigate the world. By studying HaSS, students will develop the ability to question, think critically, make decisions based on evidence, devise proposals for actions, and communicate effectively.
To celebrate our amazing subject, the HaSS Learning Area ran a series of engaging and interactive events during Week 2, including a super fun HaSS Quiz during class time for Years 7 to 9, informative presentations to the Year 10 cohort about Senior School options for HaSS subjects, an exclusive HaSS Futures Afternoon Tea for a select number of Year 10s and an all-years HaSS Week Quad Competition at lunchtime.
HaSS Week 2025

Students were put to the test proving their geographical knowledge by having to locate different countries around the world, display their chronology skills by arranging significant events in modern history in order and show off their political knowledge by identifying key figures such as Australia’s first female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard and our current Prime Minister. Many prizes and House Points were handed out, and the week was a huge success.
A huge thank you to the Second In Charge of HaSS, Jodie Ryan, for organising these amazing educational opportunities for the students at Ashdale, and the HaSS teachers for volunteering their time and energy to make HaSS week truly spectacular. We look forward to an even bigger and better HaSS Week in 2026!

Inspiring Futures: Year 10s Explore HaSS Pathways Over Afternoon Tea
In Week 2, Term 2, the HaSS Learning Area launched its inaugural Year 10 HaSS Futures Afternoon Tea, organised by the HaSS Leadership Team, Ms. Wright, and Ms. Ryan. The purpose of this event was to provide the Year 10 students considering pursuing HaSS subjects in Senior School the opportunity to explore the details of HaSS-related career pathways through presentations from experienced teachers and guest presenters.
The College provided a wonderful spread of food for students to snack on as they watched three excellent presentations from Ashdale alum from the Class of 2021, who are currently completing their qualifications in HaSS-related fields. Students heard from Alyssa Yates, currently studying a double degree at Murdoch University, majoring in Law and International Studies, Arijan Pasalik, who is completing his Masters in International Relations at UWA and Jacqlin Parker, who has studied a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Law and Society & Human Geography and Planning at UWA. The presenters discussed the importance of the Humanities in enabling informed citizenship in the modern world, shared their tips and tricks for successfully preparing for ATAR exams, and explained how studying subjects such as Modern History, Politics, and Law in Year 11/12 has benefited them post-school. This included contributing to achieving ATAR scores over 90, preparing them to win competitive internship placements at university and establishing well-paid professional career pathways.
Inspiring Futures: Year 10s Explore HaSS Pathways Over Afternoon Tea

When surveyed, students who attended wrote "It was a great afternoon with my friends – I found it very informative and helpful” and " think seeing and hearing different perspectives and experiences was really useful - especially in making decisions on our subjects!” Many students stayed back to talk one-on-one with the presenters, and overwhelmingly, this HASS Futures Afternoon tea was an incredible success.
The HaSS Department is staffed by passionate and experienced teachers who provide high-quality, engaging educational learning experiences for their classes. We look forward to guiding students who select HaSS ATAR or General subjects in 2026 through their Senior School courses.

SSWA Basketball Carnival
On Wednesday, 15 May, our Senior Boys basketball teams took to the court for an interschool tournament — and represented Ashdale with pride and determination.
The A Team delivered a strong performance, winning three out of their four matches. They narrowly missed a spot in the grand final after a closely contested semifinal against Belridge, but finished in a commendable 3rd place overall.
The B Team also impressed with their effort and teamwork, securing a win and finishing 4th overall. Their growth throughout the day was fantastic to witness and a testament to their hard work.

A huge congratulations to all players involved. Your commitment, sportsmanship, and team spirit were truly outstanding. Well done, boys – you did Ashdale proud.

Production Camp - A Resounding Success!
During Week 2, a group of passionate and dedicated students took part in our three-day Production Camp, and what an incredible experience it was for everyone involved! The camp showcased talent, teamwork, and creativity as students worked tirelessly on all aspects of our upcoming production.
We extend a huge congratulations to all the students who participated—you brought incredible energy, commitment, and focus across rehearsals, choreography, and vocal work. A true highlight of the camp was the Thursday night skits, entirely self-directed and produced by the students. The level of creativity and leadership on display was exceptional.
The genuine friendships formed across year groups, along with the peer mentoring that occurred naturally throughout the three days, made this camp especially memorable. Senior students offered guidance, encouragement, and support to younger cast members, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment that truly reflected the spirit of Ashdale.
A special thank you goes to all the staff who gave up their time, including Chantal Rodrigues and Joelle Segall, who not only organised and led the camp but also inspired students every step of the way with their vision and dedication. Thank you also to Tyson Wilkie, who joined the team on Thursday and Friday and provided fantastic support to staff and students. A heartfelt thank you to Frances Antonio for being an integral part of the team. Her unwavering support for students and staff made a meaningful difference throughout the camp.

Beyond rehearsals and performance preparation, the camp gave students a unique opportunity to bond, build confidence, and grow as a team—laying the foundation for what is sure to be an outstanding production.
We are incredibly proud of the entire cast and can’t wait to see the final performance come to life. Don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the shows! Seats are filling fast!

Ashdale Netball Academy Triumphs at SSWA Carnival
On Tuesday, 13 May and Tuesday, 27 May, Ashdale’s Netball Academy students competed in the SSWA Netball Carnival – the largest and most competitive event on our netball calendar. We proudly entered all 10 of our Academy teams, taking on some of the top specialist netball schools across the state.
To progress to the Elimination Carnival in August, teams must remain undefeated for the entire day, which often means playing up to six intense matches. This is no small feat, but we are proud to share that our Year 8 A and Year 10 A teams achieved just that – going undefeated and earning their place in the next round! Our 7A and 9A were very unlucky not to make it through, only losing one game for the day.
These outstanding results are a testament to the passion, resilience, and teamwork shown by our players throughout the carnival. A special thank you goes to the six Year 9 students who filled key spots for the Year 10 A and B teams due to injury or absence – your contributions were vital to their success.
Ashdale Netball Academy Triumphs at SSWA Carnival

Congratulations to all involved – your dedication and effort make our school proud. We look forward to cheering on our teams at the Elimination Carnival in Term 3!

Rockin’ Those Times Tables!
Our Year 7 and 8 students turned up the volume in the State Times Tables Rock Stars Competition, showing off their speed, accuracy, and competitive spirit.
The competition challenged students to answer as many multiplication and division questions correctly as possible across various game modes on the TTRS platform. Every correct answer earned points for themselves, their class, and the school – with a focus on both teamwork and accuracy.
Using a class average (based on correct answers within a 60-minute daily limit), the competition celebrated not just individual brilliance but collective effort. It was a fantastic way to build numeracy skills while having fun and supporting classmates.
Rockin’ Those Times Tables!

A huge shoutout to Mr Lo’s class – our top scorers and true times tables rock stars.
Well done to all the students who participated. Keep practising, keep rocking, and keep multiplying your maths confidence.

Year 12 Geography Virtual Fieldwork – Dirk Hartog Island
On Thursday, 1 May, our Year 12 ATAR Geography students embarked on an engaging and interactive virtual incursion to Dirk Hartog Island.
Throughout the day, students worked in teams to complete a variety of hands-on activities. These included a 3D bonehead discovery task, a wildcard challenge card game, and a virtual exploration of the island. Students also applied data collection and fieldwork techniques to investigate Dirk Hartog Island’s unique environmental rehabilitation program.
The incursion provided an excellent opportunity for students to apply their geographical knowledge and skills in a practical and collaborative setting, using statistical analysis and critical thinking to solve real-world challenges.
Year 12 Geography Virtual Fieldwork – Dirk Hartog Island

The day concluded with a relaxed and reflective debrief session, supported by hot chocolate, cookies, fresh fruit, and the ever-popular hot beige food.
Well done to all our geographers for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and willingness to dive deep into learning through this innovative experience.

Year 10 Parent Information Evening & University Pathways Sessions: Guiding the Journey into Senior School
On Wednesday, 25 June, ASC hosted the highly anticipated Year 10 Parent Information Evening, providing students and their families with a comprehensive overview of the Senior School years and the exciting journey that lies ahead. The evening offered an invaluable opportunity for parents and carers to gain a deeper understanding of the academic and well-being support available as students begin to shape their future study and career pathways.
The event featured informative presentations from key staff members, including our Deputy of Senior School, Program Coordinator - Senior School, and Program Coordinator - VET, who outlined the structure of Years 11 and 12, provided guidance on subject selection, and emphasised the importance of a balanced approach to studies and co-curricular involvement. There was particular emphasis on fostering independence, resilience, and strong time management skills—traits that are critical for success in the final years of schooling.
A highlight of the evening was the engaging university information sessions led by representatives from several leading tertiary institutions. Speakers from UWA, ECU and Curtin University shared insights into university entry requirements, ATAR scaling, early entry programs, and scholarship opportunities. They also emphasised the importance of selecting subjects that align with a student’s interests and future aspirations rather than simply pursuing high-scoring options.
Parents and students appreciated the chance to ask questions directly and hear firsthand about the diverse pathways available—from traditional undergraduate degrees to vocational education and training (VET) and gap year options.
Overall, the evening was a resounding success, equipping families with the knowledge and confidence to make informed decisions about the transition to Senior School. We thank all who attended and extend our gratitude to the university representatives and staff who made this evening such a valuable experience.

Work Placement Success for Year 11 and 12 Students
This Term, our Year 11 and 12 students have had the opportunity to participate in two-week work placements across various industries, gaining valuable real-world experience beyond the classroom. These placements are a vital part of our vocational and career development programs, enabling students to explore potential career paths, develop practical skills, and build confidence in professional environments.
From trades and healthcare to early childhood education and business administration, our students have seized the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and gain insight into the day-to-day realities of the workplace.
Work Placement Success for Year 11 and 12 Students

We extend our sincere thanks to the many local businesses and organisations that continue to support our students by offering these placements. Your ongoing willingness to mentor and invest in the next generation makes a lasting difference, and we are truly grateful for your partnership.

LEC Students Build More Than Just Art with Woolworths Minecraft Cubeez!
Our talented Year 7 LEC students have been busy bringing creativity to life through an exciting art project featuring Woolworths Minecraft Cubeez. But beyond artistic expression, this project is helping students strengthen essential core employability skills that are highly valued in the workplace.

Throughout the project, students are learning the value of teamwork—sharing ideas, problem-solving together, and working toward a common creative vision. They're practising communication as they discuss design choices, offer feedback, and celebrate each other's contributions. Cooperation is a key focus as they navigate challenges, compromise on creative decisions, and support their peers with encouragement.
This experience is also fostering patience and resilience, teaching students how to handle setbacks with a positive attitude and adaptability. As they piece together their designs, they also strengthen friendships and build a supportive community within the classroom.

Students are not only creating incredible artwork but also developing essential life skills that will benefit them far beyond the classroom. Stay tuned for more updates on their creative journey!

Students Host Elegant High Tea in Food Class
In a delightful celebration of culinary creativity and teamwork, students in the Year 10 Hospitality classes recently planned, prepared, and hosted a traditional high tea. The event was the culmination of several weeks of learning, during which students explored the history, etiquette, and culinary aspects of this classic British tradition.
The project began with careful planning. Students researched traditional high tea menus, practised time management skills, and developed their own menu concepts. They worked in groups to decide on both sweet and savoury items, ranging from fluffy scones with jam and cream to dainty sandwiches and mini quiches.
Each group was responsible for setting the table, preparing the food, and plating it. Attention to presentation was a key focus, and students learned how to plate their dishes beautifully and set a formal tea table complete with tiered stands and fine china.

Behind the Book: Author Visit Inspires Year 9 & 10 Students

On Friday, 9 May, a group of Year 9 and 10 students had the opportunity to attend an author incursion as part of their English studies of Mark Smith’s novel, A Road to Winter. The incursion was engaging and inspiring, with students responding positively to the author’s storytelling, insights about writing, and his own personal journey. Many students were intrigued by the author’s backstory, particularly his honesty about struggling with English at school and the life-changing experiences that ultimately led him to write. “His life story was interesting and made me think, ‘Am I looking at the guy that survived a near-death experience?’” one student reflected. Another commented, “I enjoyed it, especially his life story, as it was relatable how he hated English.” The author offered a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process behind writing A Road to Winter, including how he developed his characters and plot. Even students who hadn’t yet read the novel found the session valuable. “His interesting backstory hooked us, and his detailed description of the thought process behind the characters and the development of the book was interesting even though we haven’t read the book,” one student shared. Another said, “It was interesting and entertaining to hear about the book... the author explained the book well while being fun while doing it, making me want to read the book myself.” The author’s warm and engaging presence made a lasting impression, as one student aptly summed it up: “It was amazing.”

Numeracy at Home: Everyday Maths Matters!
You’ve probably heard the word “numeracy” before—but what does it really mean? Simply put, numeracy is using maths in everyday life. It’s not just about schoolwork—it’s about calculating change at the shops, working out travel times, reading graphs on the news, or figuring out a recipe. It’s maths in action, everywhere!
At school, numeracy appears in all kinds of subjects—measuring ingredients in Food Technology, reading a timeline in History, analysing graphs in Science or Geography. But it doesn’t stop at the school gate. What happens at home plays a big part in how confident students feel using mathematics.
So, how can you help boost your child’s numeracy skills at home? Here are some simple ways to make maths meaningful (and maybe even fun):
Talk It Out: Chat about number problems as they come up in real life:
- “How much change should we get back?”
- “How far is it to our destination?”
- “This item’s 25% off—how much will it cost now?”
- “Which brand is better value?”
- “Let’s check your payslip—are your hours and pay correct?”
Share Your Strategies: Show how you solve problems, especially if you use mental shortcuts. For example: to work out 299 × 3, try doing 300 × 3 = 900, then subtract 3 = 897. Smart thinking!
Get Them Involved: Whether you’re planning a holiday, building a flat-pack shelf, or doubling a recipe, bring your child into the problem-solving. Measuring, estimating and budgeting are great ways to sneak in real-world maths.
Explore Different Methods: There’s often more than one way to solve a problem. Your method might differ from what your child learns at school—and that’s okay! Comparing strategies can spark great conversations.
Every little moment counts: When students see maths in everyday life, they’re more likely to make sense of it in the classroom too. Let’s team up to make numeracy something they don’t just “do” in school, but live every day!
Tracey Rutter
Numeracy Coordinator
