Message from the Principal

The start of Term 4 has been a hive of activity. Over the break, our Year 12 ATAR students completed their Semester 2 exams. Students then returned to school to study frantically for their final exams which commenced last week. I hope our students feel prepared and able to do themselves justice on the day. I wish them all the best of luck with these exams and for the entire cohort in their future endeavours. The College staff are very proud of them and hope that their hard work is rewarded.

Perhaps the most significant event to occur since Term 3, is that we have said farewell to our Year 12 students after six successful years at Ashdale SC and 13 years of education. This cohort was genuinely unique not only as the group of students to be the first to start Year 7 in the Secondary Setting but also they will always remember completing their final year in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. In what has become a tradition; Year 12 students had a poignant and memorable breakfast which was followed by the farewell assembly. Head Boy, Hazem Kanawati and Head Girl, Rhianna Kara gave an excellent farewell speech and presented the College with the 2020 cohort gift of a time capsule which will be held in the Learning Hub. Year 12 students, Dylan Zaffino and Charlotte Ross, wowed the College staff and students when they performed their final songs together. As expected with Ashdale SC students, the Class of 2020 did us all proud with their results to date, attitude and behaviour.

Year 12 Graduation was a major focus for many weeks, and this culminated in a high-quality graduation ceremony held for the first time at the HBF Arena in Joondalup. The venue was fantastic, and the additional space allowed us to proceed with a ceremony largely unaffected by the current COVID-19 restrictions. One of the many things we commemorated at this special occasion was the achievements of Hazem Kanawati and Dylan Zaffino, as joint ATAR Dux recipients and Kayla Nguyen who was awarded with the General Dux. These students are worthy winners in a field crowded with academic, sporting, cultural and civic talent. I want to extend my thanks in particular to Jamie Long, Josh Popp, Ben Retamal, Nikki Pullella, Anne Watson and Frances Antonio for their efforts in ensuring the graduation was a success.

Our Year 12 students are currently completing their WACE exams, and then we move into Year 8-11 exams. We wish all students the best of luck with their exams and encourage all students to try their best, review and demonstrate their knowledge at these critical times as we prepare them for their future years of schooling. Our Year 11 students are currently completing their Workplace Learning placements with many positive reports coming back to the College from host employers.

As some of you may have heard, Ashdale Secondary College was named as a finalist for the Governor’s School STEM Awards. This is the third time that Ashdale SC has been recognised in these awards, and we look forward to representing the College at Government House on 24 November at the awards ceremony.

Throughout the rest of this edition of the College newsletter, you will read about the fabulous opportunities and events that have been occurring during this Term. It is important to recognise that in Week 3 we celebrated NAIDOC week. This year we had a full program of celebrations for all students of the College. It was fabulous to see our students engaging in cultural activities, and we look forward to this event being even bigger next year.

As always, we remain committed to maintaining our community focus, and we invite you to attend our annual Ashdale SC Showcase on Monday 7 December. This event showcases the wonderful efforts of students and staff across the College whilst celebrating a year like no other. Our annual College Art Exhibition opening will also occur during the event where our very talented students’ work will be on display.

Graduation Breakfast, Assembly and Evening

After six years of secondary education, our Year 12s were involved with several events to celebrate their time at the College. The final day at the College began with a breakfast catered for by fantastic Hospitality students and staff. This was followed by a moving final assembly whereby the current Year 11 students created a guard of honour to farewell the Graduating Class of 2020. The Graduation Evening held at HBF Joondalup Arena was an opportunity to present all students with their Graduation Certificates and to honour those who had achieved an outstanding result in their subject areas. It was a fitting end to a rather extraordinary year, and we wish every graduate the very best for their future endeavours.

NAIDOC Week

NAIDOC Week celebrations were held across Ashdale Secondary College during Week 3 of Term 4 to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Students had many opportunities to participate in activities during mentor time, in class and at lunchtime to celebrate and learn more about one of the oldest cultures in the world.

Year 7 Students participated in a ‘Blanket Activity’ incursion – an interactive journey exploring the historical and contemporary relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, with the emphasis of working toward reconciliation.

Multiple lunchtime activities were organised including an Indigenous Handball (KAI) Competition, music featuring Indigenous Artists, a Bush Tucker Planting workshop, a documentary viewing and Digeridoo performance by Mr Wilkie. Students created wonderful Indigenous culinary dishes in Home Economics including kangaroo mince sausage rolls, kangaroo meat skewers and damper decorated with Indigenous-inspired designs using vegetables. Ashdale Deadly Mob students were invited to attend a basket weaving incursion and learnt how to use plant material to create intricate baskets.

Thank you to all the staff and students that organised and participated in the NAIDOC week events, we look forward to planning an even bigger NAIDOC week next year!

9CTI 3D Hands

Students in the ICT Approved Specialist Program are all busy developing exciting projects for the Ashdale Showcase in December. This is especially true for Year 9 students Ria Mandalia, Yash Vekaria, Olivia Muller and Ana Vladic, who have all signed up to be part of a groundbreaking initiative which sees them 3D print and assemble prosthetic hands for worthy beneficiaries. Working in two teams, the students have been watching videos, reading tutorials, assembling a prototype, and meeting and taking measurements of their two beneficiaries, so the final products fit like a glove. It is the first time these free prosthetics have ever been manufactured here in Western Australia and within a school. While 2020 is something of a trial run, it is hoped that success this year will translate to the project becoming an annual event.

Year 11 Holocaust Excursion

This year the Year 11 Modern History students attended a workshop run by the Holocaust Institute of WA. At this workshop, students discussed the rise of Nazism in Germany, the roots of anti-semitism and the stages of the Holocaust. They worked with students from other schools to explore the importance of civil rights, simulate conditions in the Warsaw ghetto and hear the testimony of a 2nd generation Holocaust survivor. It was an important learning experience for our students who demonstrated great knowledge, respect, and empathy.

2020 IMSS Area Band Workshop

Ashdale SC once again hosted the IMSS Area Band Workshop for beginner brass, wind and percussion students (Year 6 & 7) for the local area in Week 3, Term 4. We had a fantastic turnout of 50 students from seven different primary schools as well as some Year 7s from ASC.

The students participated in a range of activities designed to help develop their ensemble playing skills including rhythmic games, sectional rehearsals and full ensemble rehearsals. At the conclusion of the day, the students performed the three pieces they learned during the workshop. The ensemble worked really hard, and both staff and students enjoyed the day. It is exciting for the students to play in a large ensemble as this would have been the first occasion for many of them.

Ashdale Markets

This Term, students enrolled in Year 9 & 10 Business participated in ‘Ashdale Markets’. This in-house program involved students, either as a sole trader or in partnership with other students, developing a business concept and writing a Business Plan. Some of the noteworthy business concepts students pursued included: the sale of stress balls, tie-dye socks, cookies, bubble tea, and 3D printed toys.

The project was structured to engage students in an immersive and highly authentic experience that encouraged and cultivated their entrepreneurial spirit. Last Term, students worked on the planning phase of their business, creating a comprehensive business plan documenting their company’s overarching mission and strategy given the current business climate. Furthermore, students conducted market research informing their choices regarding their product’s “marketing mix” – such as deciding the most appropriate logo design, product features, pricing structures and promotional strategies to ensure popularity among their chosen target market.

Based on the quality of their concept and business plan, several students were then selected to bring their businesses to life. On 29 and 30 October, these students set up their stalls prepared their products for sale and sold their items to customers at both recess and lunch.

In total, over $900 in profits were raised by the businesses, which will be donated to ‘No Limits’. This charitable organisation provides any assistance they can to help those in need, including access to basic needs such as food, transport, furniture, hygiene and personal items and facilitating access to emergency accommodation. In this way, students studying business have appreciated how organisations can profitably be used to make a positive impact in the community.

Bus Embayment Mural

The Visual Arts department were honoured to be asked to design the mural for the upcoming bus embayment on Kingsway. This bus embayment will assist local community members and students from Ashdale Primary, Ashdale Secondary College and Kingsway Christian College. Our creative team consisted of five talented Year 10 students; Alysha Nguyen, Razaanah Chota, Lauren Lam, Amelia Bui, Kelvin Law. As a team, we looked at the history of Darch and the industries created here. Initially, Darch was farming land that grew many fruits and vegetables for the people of this area. In today’s contemporary society, Darch is known for its schools, and thus, the main industry of this area is now education. Our students took these two connections of growth to create three beautiful compositions that celebrate these successes. Students used a variety of materials that are both traditional and contemporary medias to create the designs. We eagerly await a response from Trans Perth WA for their selection for the 19-metre long bus embayment. Watch this space!

STEM across the Cluster!

The beginning of this Term has been full of STEM for our Cluster primary schools with our 5th annual STEM Girls Day Camp and our two final STEM champion workshops for 2020.

STEM Girls Day Camp

On Saturday 24 October 65 enthusiastic young year 4 and 5 girls participated in a day camp to excite them about renewable energy.

The day began with girls cooking s’mores to enjoy at morning tea by constructing their solar oven, followed by our keynote speaker Margot Hammond, Western Power to teach them all about stand-alone power systems. The girls then met their industry mentor’s (14 passionate females from various STEM professions). They worked through a series of workshops to discover all about wind turbines, circuits, conductors, insulators and solar power.

By the afternoon the learning hub became a bustle of creativity as the campers applied all they had learnt to build a microgrid and power LED lights using solar panels and their wind turbines. Problem-solving, collaboration and creativity skills were demonstrated by all to produce spectacular working designs!

The day could not have been a success without our 18 STEM student leaders from year 7, 8 and 11, as well as 12 staff members who volunteered to help on the day. A huge thank you to all involved.

STEM Champions

Our final STEM Champions events; Scintillating Science and Phenomenal Photoshop, were held earlier this week on Tuesday 10 November. These termly events see parents and their child/ren visit ASC and engage in all things STEM.

Scintillating Science involves being blown away (not literally) by Mr Williams’ chemistry skills before working through a series of experiments, including the always popular make your own slime station!

Phenomenal Photoshop, led by Mrs Yates, helps students and parents learn about the fundamentals of the very popular Adobe Photoshop and get creative in designing their masterpieces.

Throughout the year, we’ve had over 360 parents and students from within the Cluster participate in these events. Thank you to all the teacher volunteers who have shared their STEM passions with our wider community.

Rube Goldberg Projects

Our talented Year 7 students have been combining their STEM skills with their knowledge of simple machines this week in Science. They have been working extremely hard to create Rube Goldberg machines which are an overly complicated system designed to perform a simple task. Our students have been showing their outstanding creativity and ingenuity with some brilliant designs coming to fruition.

Earth Excursion

Well… Who knew rocks would be so interesting?! Miss Lennox did!

On 27 October the Year 11 ATAR Earth and Environmental Science students attended an excursion to John Forrest National Park and Boya Quarry with Miss Lennox, Miss Leeming and Mr Austin. This excursion was designed for students to develop their practical fieldwork skills and apply their knowledge to the real world.

As part of their fieldwork, students analysed various igneous rocks based on their texture and mineralogy. Using their understanding from class and with Miss Lennox’s guidance, the students were able to identify whether the igneous rock was basalt, dolerite, gabbro, rhyolite, diorite or granite. The Year 11s demonstrated fantastic co-operation, collaboration, critical thinking and scientific inquiry skills. It was wonderful to see the students put their knowledge into practice!

The weather was perfect for fieldwork, and the students had a great time learning Earth and Environmental Science outside of the classroom. They were even paid a visit by the ghost that haunts the Swan View Tunnel.

Soccer Academy Futsal Competition

As the year winds down, the Soccer Academy classes took part in the annual Futsal Competition. We entered 20 teams over the four-day competition. We played some solid teams with Lake Joondalup Baptist College beating some of our teams in the final match.

All Soccer Academy students were involved, allowing them the opportunity to represent the College.

It has been a challenging year, but the Ashdale Soccer Academy has tasted success, winning the Year 9/10 State Championship for the first time in the College’s history. We look forward to continuing this success in 2021, which will hopefully be an uninterrupted year.

Our experience with Dr Anne Aly

On Wednesday 4 November, Federal Representative for Cowan and counter-terrorism expert Dr Anne Aly kindly volunteered her time to talk to 40 Year 9 students at Ashdale Secondary College. Each year, as part of the annual Canberra Tour the Year 9 students would usually have had the opportunity to fly to Canberra and visit Parliament House and speak with Dr Aly. Unfortunately, because of COVID-19 restrictions, this year, this was unable to take place. However, Dr Aly kindly came to ASC instead talk to us about her experiences as the first Muslim woman to be elected to Federal parliament and her experiences as an expert in politics and counter-terrorism.

Dr Aly started with an inspirational and educational introduction of herself and how she moved into politics after many years of working overseas with many degrees under her belt, such as a PhD, an MEd, and a PGDA. After she discussed her work and experiences, Dr Aly gave us the opportunity to ask her questions about her position as a politician, her favourite experiences and her involvement in meeting politicians such as Scott Morrison and Barack Obama.

Dr Aly was uplifting and extremely educated in her field of work, which made her experience with us not only entertaining but also informative. On behalf of the Year 9 cohort, we would like to profoundly thank Dr Aly for her enthusiasm and for taking the time out of her hectic day to come and talk to us. We also want to thank Ashdale Secondary College and the HOLA of HASS, Mr Witt, for making this exceptional event possible and providing us with snacks and refreshments.

HaSS US Consulate Visit

On Tuesday 20 October, the Year 11 ATAR Politics and Law class and Year 10 extension HaSS class had the privilege of being visited by a Public Affairs Officer from the United States of America Consulate. Students discussed shared values, adopted influences and current foreign policy between both Australia and the US. Students were highly engaged, contributing to lively discussion and asking insightful questions. Students were also encouraged to seek out opportunities through the Perth US-Asia Centre, West Tech Fest Conventions and the of potential future opportunities such as internships at the consulate itself! What a fantastic opportunity offered through ASC HaSS courses.

Student Leaders Day Camp

On Monday 21 September, the Student Leader Team attended the Ern Halliday Cluster Leadership Day Camp. We enjoyed a range of multiple different activities from team-building games to archery to crate climbing, all of which were fun.

Returning for my second time now as a Year 7 Student Leader, the experience was just as much fun as the first time. When I attended in Year 6 as a primary school student from the Cluster, I tended to be a lot more laid back, letting everyone else contribute, whereas this year I was able to take charge and assist in mentoring the students.

Many leaders, I included, found the most enjoyable activity was the crate climb. This was an activity where your group had to create a staircase made of rickety and unstable crates, with a goal to reach a point about 14 crates high. If you ever get the chance to do it, I 100% recommend going up the tower, no matter how scary it looks. As a Year 6 student, it was easy to get distracted by the sheer height of the tower and let the others take over, whereas being a Year 7 student now, doing it for the second time, you were able to better focus on the activity and direct the students who were rather lost. Although this activity seemed like it was just for fun, rather than a leadership building activity, it assisted in drastically improving my leadership skills.

Although the day’s activities helped with my leadership skills, it wasn’t by any means exclusive to that. During the day, we were mixed in with Year 6 students from across the Cluster, and we got to know them quite well. From my personal experience, I caught up with many students who I had known from primary school while also getting to know many new faces.

The day overall was an incredible experience that I would recommend to any student who has the opportunity to do it. I would love to be able to do it again and hopefully, I will be able to next year.

Hospitality at Ashdale SC

Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students have been working hard all year to master their barista skills. The students have been working in the College’s recess café serving different coffees and slices to teachers while working to industry standard. Congratulations to this year’s Year 12 students on obtaining their Certificate II Hospitality, their hard work throughout the year paid off.

We are looking forward to working with the Year 11 students next year to refine their skills and obtain their final certificate.

Cakes, cakes and more cakes!

Year 9s have been baking cakes. Not small, plain cakes, but big colourful cakes, chocolate cakes, round cakes, square cakes and tiered cakes. Cakes for Easter, cakes for birthdays, cakes for all types of celebrations. Our exceptional Home Economics students were given the task of baking and decorating a cake of their choice, worthy of a special occasion in their life. A picture speaks a thousand words….

Virtual Reality

The College invested Virtual and Augmented Reality this year and now have a class set of Oculus Go headsets, a class set of Merge Cubes and two Lenovo Explorers. Students in Science, English, HASS, SALP and Digital Technologies classes have all been using the headsets in classes to explore new content and see the world a little differently. Students in Digital Technologies and Science classes have also been creating their own virtual reality worlds in a program called CoSpaces. It has been a lot of fun! A number of our students and staff members have been asked to present at a conference later in the year, sharing what they have learned with teachers and students from other schools.

Interschool Athletics

On Friday 16 October over 90 students in Ashdale's 2020 Interschool Athletics Team travelled to the WA Athletics Stadium to compete against eight other schools from across Perth.

The competition for the day proved tough this year. We had several students placing in the top three for their event, which was an excellent achievement.

Congratulations to Austin Chapman who won Champion Boy for his age group once again and scored some of the highest points earned by an individual champion. Xavier Hickey also placed third for Individual Champions, 2 points behind second place. Our Year 9 Boys relay team proved strong placing first for the third year in a row.

Overall, the students showed a great deal of determination, athleticism, and teamwork. A special thank you to all our staff and student helpers for the day. We're all looking forward to building on our success and coming back next year.

Netball Academy

Our Year 10 Netball Academy students are looking forward to our upcoming South West Tour scheduled for week 8. Students will be competing against a range of schools, whilst also experiencing some of the best attractions the south-west has to offer. Best of luck to all students attending.

Work Experience students finish the year with a flourish

This year has been very challenging within the VET and Workplace Learning Office with all that has happened both locally and globally. COVID 19 hindered our student’s capacity for learning outside of the College in the early part of the year. Placements didn’t commence in earnest until Term 3. We welcomed a new member to the team this year Jess Della Franca; she has hit the ground running and slotted in seamlessly.

The students who studied Career and Enterprise in Year 12 went out for a two-week placement in weeks 9 and 10 of Term 3. All of our Year 11 General students have just finished their two-week placements. The overwhelming impressions of our students have been excellent. The accolades have been coming in from host employers thick and fast. They should be very proud of the way they have conducted themselves and held up the good name of the College.

The industries that the students have been placed in range from Building and Construction to Beauty Therapy, office-based Financial Accountants to Retail music stores, Radio Stations to Charity Shops and many more.

As a result of our student’s work ethic, commitment and enthusiasm, many of our students have received offers of employment, including part-time, casual opportunities and apprenticeships. For those students that are not returning due to the commencement of an apprenticeship, we wish you well for the future, for all others, we look forward to working with you again next year.

Literacy – ways to engage at home

Literacy is a life journey that is ongoing and knows no time boundaries. It does not have a 9 – 5 job or only happens in Weeks 1 – 10 of each term. As such, there are several things you can do at home to support your child on their literacy journey.

  • Help your child gather newspaper, magazine and journal articles for a topic of interest at school. Help them find information on internet sites.
  • Talk to your child about what they have been reading on the Internet. What have they learned? What questions do they still have? Where else could they find information that would be useful?
  • Talk to your child’s teacher about available books and resources that relate to your child’s interests.
  • Play card and board games as a family. Increase the challenge – it really helps children’s learning.

Read together

  • Read your child a novel that they are interested in – try one or two chapters each day.
  • Get your child to listen to younger siblings doing their reading homework (this is a good chance for them to practise some of their own reading skills).
  • You can remind them about pausing while the younger child thinks about a word they do not know.
  • Have books, magazines, comics, newspapers and other information available for everyone in your family to read on topics that interest your child – e.g. skateboarding, surfing, fashion.
  • Listen together to CDs and mp3s of your child’s favourite stories, books and songs.

Write for a reason

  • Write a letter or an email to a newspaper editor, radio announcer or television broadcaster sharing your child’s opinion on a topic of interest in the news.
  • Start a blog/wiki on the Internet and get your child to record thoughts about their day to share with their friends and family.
  • Start a writing journal to record trips and weekend activities.
  • Take some photos using a digital camera and write a picture book for a younger child using the photos.
  • Write a comic using drawings and graphic design to present an idea or story.

Make writing fun

  • Play strategy games and do word puzzles like word search puzzles and crosswords.
  • Make the weekly shopping list using supermarket flyers and find all the bargains and savings to fit the budget.
  • Write some descriptions for items you may wish to sell using the Internet.

Literacy is all around us and is the tool needed to be successful for life. As Kofi Annan so appropriately said: “Literacy is, finally, the road to human progress and the means through which every man, woman and child can realise his or her full potential.”

Benefits of Playing Games to Improve Mathematics and Problem Solving

The school holidays are an excellent time to interact through playing games and with the added bonus of improving and developing mathematical and problem-solving skills. Playing games can:

  • spark motivation, enjoyment and participation - children choose to take part and enjoy playing especially those games that involve a race to finish on a board or race against time;
  • create positive attitudes and interaction - building self-concept and developing positive attitudes through reducing the fear of failure, taking turns and success;
  • increase learning - in comparison to more formal activities, greater understanding can occur through games due to the increased interaction between participants, opportunities to test intuitive ideas and problem-solving strategies;
  • cater to different levels - games can allow children to operate at different levels of thinking and to learn from each other.

Spatial Strategy Games

Spatial strategy games might involve moving pieces around a board strategically, usually to capture or block an opponent, like Chess and Draughts. They also include placing pieces to make a pattern or seize territory, like Noughts and Crosses, Connect Four or Battleships.

Numerical and Literacy Strategy Games

Games involving numerical skills include Monopoly and Game of Life or literacy games such as Scrabble and Boggle.

Card Games

Using a pack of cards teaches doing tricks (like 4 of a kind) and sets like in Rummy, 21 and Phase 10, or emptying one's hand like in Fish, Old Maid, and Uno.

Arithmetical Games

These games might use cards (like ONO'99), dice (like Number Boggle) or targets (like Darts or Finska) to deliver the numbers that are then calculated in some way according to a set of rules. The games usually involve an element of chance, which adds more interest, like Yahtzee and Number Boggle.

Matching Games

Using a set of tiles, matching ends or making patterns, like Dominoes and the less known number game Triominoes. Memory (under its many other names) involves turning a pair of cards face down and trying to find the pair by turning only two cards face-up at a time. This type of game is beneficial for practice and consolidation of basic number skills such as times-tables, but usually involves little strategy or player interaction.

Strategy Games

Guess My Number and Twenty Questions type games can stimulate quite a lot of mathematical thinking and strategy development. Basic strategy games are particularly suitable as starting points for investigations because players instinctively try to discover a winning strategy; and usually, the best way to do this is to analyse the outcomes of series of 'moves'. Games which require problem-solving and strategy include Cluedo, Quirkle, Battleships.

Payment Instalments for 2021 Subject Selection Charges

Instalments are offered when paying for subject selection charges. Advance payment of $50 (Year 9 & 10) and $100 (Year 11 & 12) was required upon subject selection. If you have not done so already, please make payment as soon as possible as subject selections are not considered lodged until payment is received. If payment is not received, placement is not guaranteed and the College may provide alternative course options.

Voluntary Contributions and Charges

Thank you to families that have finalised payment or are making regular payment toward students’ contribution and charges. Your support of our teaching and learning programs makes a significant difference for our students.

For those with outstanding contributions and charges we would sincerely appreciate payment being finalised as soon as possible. The College offers the following methods of payment:
